Dr. Betty Shabazz

Betty Shabazz, also known as Betty X, was an American educator and civil rights advocate. Dr. Shabazz married Malcolm X on January 14, 1958. Together, they had six daughters, Attallah, Qubilah, Ilyasah, Gamilah Lumumba, and twins, Malikah and Malaak. In July 1975, she earned her doctorate in education administration and curriculum development. Dr. Shabazz volunteered with many organizations, sometimes alongside Coretta King and Myrlie Evers-Williams. Evers-Williams described her as a “free spirit, in the best sense of the word. When she laughed, she had this beauty; when she smiled, it lit up the whole room.”
